Sports Update for April 17

Baseball

The Gators returned to the diamond after being off for nine days, and split a doubleheader with host Virginia State University on April 15.

In the first game, which the Gators won 3-1, Will Michalowicz got VPCC off to a great start with a two-run triple in the top of the first. Nate Sherman drove in an insurance run with a single in the top of the seventh. Brandon Drewery earned the win on the mound, throwing a complete game and giving up one run and six hits. He struck out six and didn’t walk a batter.

The second game didn’t go as well as the Gators lost 10-3. They fell behind 6-0 before scoring three runs in the top of the fifth. Jude Morton had a two-run double, and Joey Williams an RBI single. However, VSU came back with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Prior to the VSU series, the Gators hadn’t played since splitting a doubleheader April 5 at Community College of Baltimore County. The Gators were rained out April 7 and 8, and off April 9 for Easter.

This week, the Gators close out the home portion of their regular-season schedule:

April 22: vs. Surry CC, War Memorial Stadium, 1 p.m. (DH)

April 23: vs. Surry CC, War Memorial Stadium, 11 a.m. (9 innings)

The Gators do play at War Memorial Stadium on April 27, but are the visitors to the Apprentice School.
